Robert "Bobby" Fischer (1943-2008) was an American-born chess Grandmaster. In 1972 he became the first, and so far the only, American to win the official World Chess Championship. He is often referred to as one of the greatest chess players of all time. He was renowned for his opening strategy and made numerous contributions to chess opening theory. He is also thought by some to be one of the five best end-game players.
